If you're anything like me this time of year,

you're probably already running around with an endless to-do list getting ready for the holidays. Although, I find there's something exhilarating about this specific type of stress. It's the visions of joyful gatherings with friends and family, full of rich edibles & too much mulled wine (wait, is there such a thing?) that keep me going in the early days of December. This year for Christmas, (part of) my family has decided to re-direct our gift giving from electronics & mass-produced goods towards handmade items, either by us or from a local maker. Of course, as someone who makes things by hand for a living, I am super biased... but I'm loving this idea. I normally make most of the gifts I give anyways, but this year my plan is to fill in all the bits and pieces in between with things from my fellow vendors at our holiday markets.

Speaking of which... here are the 2 holiday markets where you can find us this december.

December 3rd & 4th

Etsy Vancouver Winter 2016 Market @ The Pipeshop Building in the Lonsdale Quay

Saturday Dec 3 - 10 am - 8 pm

Sunday Dec 4 - 10 am to 5 pm

December 8th - 11th

Make-It Vancouver @ The PNE Forum

See above for details.

What you need to know before heading to the markets

SWAG BAGS. The first 50 people in line on each day of the Etsy market will receive a swag bag full of items from the vendors. Lots of these items are full-sized products, so this is a great way to load up on stocking stuffers...for free!

Save $2 off admission to Make-It by purchasing your tickets in advance online.

Make-It Vancouver is BIG. Plan your day accordingly. Here's a tip-- if you want to beat the crowds, come on Thursday or Friday to avoid the masses. Although if you have to come on the weekends, don't let the crowds discourage you- it's a fun and friendly shopping environment, and so worth it.

Wasuremono Zipper Pouch

W a s u r e m o n o

Exclusively at the markets, we will be selling items from our new collection. Wasuremono means "discarded" or "unwanted" in Japanese.

This collection features goods made with second hand kimono & yukata, which I brought back from my recent trip to Japan. These fabrics are high-quality silks and cottons in beautiful Ikat weaves and sateens. In the new year, we will be launching this as a separate brand, but for this holiday season only, you will be able to find these items at the Scandinazn table.

If you can't make it out to either of these Vancouver markets, that's too bad! But you can still purchase Scandinazn goods on our Etsy Shop.

We've got lots of new products up, and have re-stocked old favourites.

Happy Holidays!

(yes, I'm allowed to say this... it's December).

Scandinazn will be back out and about in August with two market dates!

We had SUCH a good time at the Khatsahlano street event on July 9th, and were overwhelmed by all the positive vibes from festival-goers. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to gaze at our goods, and chat.

Here's what's coming up for us in the next couple months...

Fun City Festival

On August 13th and 14th, you’ll be able to find us at North Vancouver’s Fun City festival. This festival is part of the Slide the City event (1000 foot long slip n slide, anyone?), and is North Van’s largest community festival, encompassing 8 city blocks, lined with food & artisan vendors.

Vancouver Mural Festival

On August 20th, we’ll be at Vancouver’s first ever Mural Festival. This will be taking place in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, which will be receiving 35+ new permanent murals, painted over the course of the week. The street festival (taking place on the 20th) will highlight local artists, musicians, and vendors, gathered around the Main & Broadway area, taking place while the murals are in progress.

ALSO...

We are VERY EXCITED to announce that Scandinazn will be a vendor at the Vancouver Made in Canada Etsy Market! This one takes place at the Pipe Shop Building (at Lonsdale Quay) on September 24th and 25th. It’s great being part of an online community such as Etsy, and a great opportunity to meet the people behind some of your favourite local online shops.

In the meantime, you can follow us on instagram for updates on new designs we'll be bringing to these markets. Find us @scandinazn.

I recently completed the adventure of a lifetime.

In January, I gave up my apartment and left behind my business for 3 months to travel around Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan & Japan. During my travels, amongst all the blissful good times, I somehow managed to work a little Jewelry business into the mix. Aside from the obvious (inspiration, duh), the way I made my trip to Asia a "business trip" came in the form of some crystal hunting.

I was fortunate to be introduced to the sister of a friend, who is a jewelry design / gemmology student in Bangkok. She volunteered to take me around the wholesale jewelry district. It's common for foreigners to get mixed up in Gemstone / Jewelry scams in this city, so having a companion well-versed in gemstone identification was fabulous. The wholesale jewelry district is made up of malls catering to mass manufacturers of jewelry. In these malls, there are hundreds of boutiques selling all sorts of supplies from high-end cut gemstones, to molds for casting metal and raw crystals. Tons of 'em. The shop I ended up scoring at was stacked wall-to-wall with buckets of raw crystals of all shapes and sizes. A DREAM COME TRUE.

Buckets of raw crystals in the wholesale jewelry district of Bangkok.

I spent ages poring over buckets upon buckets of gemstones, picking out pairs to make into earrings, and brought back as many as I could justify carrying in my already bursting-at-the-seams traveller's backpack.

My carefully curated selection of crystals: grossular garnet, apatite, pyrite, rhodolite garnet, emerald, etc.

2 months later, and I'm back at home with a sack full of gemstones. These beauties have been polished up, and transformed into simple, yet elegant crystal stud earrings.

We've made Green Apatite, Hexagonal & Nugget Sapphire, Grossular & Rhodolite Garnet, Aquamarine, Pyrite, Citrine, and Emerald studs, and they're available now on the Scandinazn Etsy Shop.
