Small みかん Mandarin Orange Earrings
I grew up calling these "Mikan" - the word for Mandarin Orange in Japanese. I recently read about how crates of Mikan first arrived in Vancouver in the late 1800s as New Years gifts for the first wave of Japanese immigrants. They were shared amongst their networks and eventually caught on outside the Japanese community. Now we can get them all year round, but they used to be associated with Christmas and were common to find in the toe of your stocking. Read more about it here.
I was inspired to make an earring version after my trip to Japan earlier this year. I biked the Shimanami Kaido route, which traversed several little islands in the Seto Sea, each of them rich with groves of citrus. Oranges, Yuzu, Lemons ... the smell of their blossoms was intoxicating.
These earrings come in LG + SM, and the leaves sandwich the orange piece in between for added quality.
