Herring Earrings
HERRING ERRING 🐟 Flip through the pics to see how they look in the shade + full sun.
These aquatic cuties are limited edition - cut from a prized scrap of iridescent leather with the texture of fish scales. Due to the iridescent nature of the finish, they pickup colour from their surroundings and can look purple, pink or blueish depending on the light. The backside is reinforced by a leather backing piece, and they hang from surgical stainless steel hooks.
I chose to use this piece to make earrings resembling herrings, because it's a fish found in the cuisines of Japan + Sweden (paying homage to my mixed roots) but also in the coastal waters of BC. I grew up looking forward to crunching on Herring Roe (Kazunoko) at our Japanese family picnics in the summer.
